As a responsible team, Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM), recognizes the importance of collaborating social and environmental accountability into its activity such that it has minimal impact to the environment.
As a step towards more sustainable world a lot of Green Initiatives - driven by NextGen – SCMM 2012’s Green consultants - are taken right from creating awareness to reduce emissions to minimize the amount of waste generated.
In pursuit of getting as close to zero-waste event as possible, SCMM 2012 will be providing bins at multiple points across the event for participants to dispose off any waste generated during the course of the event.
Looking at the huge pool of 40,000 plus runners and guests the quantum of waste is also huge; so to provide efficient waste management in SCMM 2012, Services N Solutions – a Corporate Social Responsibility Consultancy, will be providing a team of around 200 volunteers to collect the waste across the whole route so that it can then be sent for further recycling
The first thing when we think of waste at Marathon events is Plastic bottles, for the obvious reason that water is the first thing any participant would want after the long and tiring run. Managing plastic bottle in an eco friendly way is always a problem, but not anymore. At SCMM 2012, all PET bottles will be recycled in a very unique and distinguished way.
The PET bottles collected by Services N Solutions will be sent to “Polygenta.” It is an integrated producer and processor of multi-filament polyester textured yarn. The ReNEW process at Polygenta, is unique given its ability to recycle dirty and coloured plastic bottles in a cost effective manner as well as significantly reducing the use of virgin petrochemical feedstock and delivering superior quality products.
All the PET bottle waste generated at SCMM 2012 will be converted to Polyester yarn. That’s really ingenious.
In further effort to minimize the trash going to landfills, SCMM 2012 will be composting all kind of food waste like banana and orange peel generated. All the paper waste generated will go back to paper manufacturing unit for further recycling. This initiative is being taken care by Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA), a Delhi based NGO educating the importance of incorporating issues such as, environmental considerations, and self-sustainability,
SCMM 2012 urges all participants to come forward for recycling. By recycling everyone is a winner for the Green Cause !!!
