Stage set for 38,775 participants
Procam International, promoters of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) 2012, today announced the changed route for the 9th edition of Asia's largest and richest marathon in the SCMM Media Centre at Marathi Patrakar Sangh.
Jt. MD, Procam International, Vivek B Singh joined Race Director Hugh Jones, Race Referee Dave Cundy and AFI Technical Committee Chairman C K Valson to address the press conference.
Covering a distance of 42.195 km, the Elite and Amateur Marathons will be flagged off at 07:25 and 05:40am respectively from opposite the prominent Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) covering Nariman Road, NCPA, Chowpatty, Kemps Corner Flyover, Haji Ali junction, Love Grove Flyover, the Bandra Worli Sea Link, Mahim Church, Siddhivinayak, Poddar Hospital, Worli sea face to return to the terminus.
The change in the route will be beneficial to the athletes as they get onto the Bandra Worli Sea-Link (BWSL) after 14 kms as opposed to the earlier route which was after 24kms. After the BWSL the athletes will pass the toll plaza, switch the carriage way, move towards Bandra Causeway and turn right towards Mahim Church.
Speaking at the briefing session, Race Director Hugh Jones said, "It's a pleasure to be back in Mumbai and we hope the change in route will help clock a faster time. Moreover, being considered as a qualifier for the Olympic Games is an added advantage to the athletes. This year we are back with the Athletics Federation of India and we had a fruitful relationship with them over the years and will continue in the future as well."
Mr CK Valson, Chairman of Technical Committee Athletic Federation of India stated, "We are extremely happy to be a part of Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. We have checked the course yesterday and it's an excellent one. Most of the Indian athletes have been given the opportunity to participate and we hope the weather is pleasant and our athletes can make the Olympic Qualifier."
The Half Marathon will begin at 06:15am from opposite the Bandra Fire Station, go on to the Sea Link, and trace the same route back as the Marathon to finish opposite CST.
The Wheelchair event will begin at 07.45 am from CST and finish near Gate No. 3 of Azad Maidan, opposite Metro Cinema, and so will the Senior Citizens Run, beginning at CST at 8.00 am before finishing near Gate No. 3 of Azad Maidan. The Dream Run will begin at 9.00 am from CST and finish near Gate No. 3 of Azad Maidan.
The enhanced prize money and the IAAF Gold Label status of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2012 has attracted a field of the world's best male and female elite athletes, who will run on the streets of Mumbai on January 15.
The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has become the focal rallying point for the city of Mumbai, showcasing the best of what Mumbai can be. Promoters Procam International, along with the sponsors and partners, will never cease in their efforts to innovate and evolve in order to provide an excellent running experience to the participant. It's a collective task and in order to succeed needs the constructive support of all involved.
