Strong response from Bangalore city: Since its inception, the World 10K Bangalore has been embraced by the city and its citizens as its very own, the sense of ownership and belonging strengthening over the years. For the fifth year the total participation in the event has crossed 21,000 and it is this commitment from the participants that propels promoters Procam International, backed by the powers that govern, to deliver an even better event on May 27, 2012.
The Open 10K Run, which also includes the Corporate Challenge, has received around 9000 entries, while the Majja Run a whopping 11,500. Besides these races, the feature events of the day will be the World 10K for elite men & women and the Nation's Challenge.
Participation in the Corporate Challenge has tripled this year, with 44 companies having fielded 130 Corporate Challenge teams. Last year, 19 companies had fielded 47 teams for the same. Last year's top three winners, TESCO, IBM India and Sony have once again entered the fray.
The top five finishers in the Corporate Challenge category will prize money, with the winning team taking home Rs 65,000 and the runner-up team gaining Rs 55,000. The three-member team will need to have two men and one woman, with each member needing to complete the full distance of 10 km. The average of the net finish timings of all three runners will decide the finish positions in this category. To further enhance competition, the team which accomplishes an average finish time faster than 40 minutes will win a bonus prize of Rs 15,000.
Nation's Challenge revived: The Nation's Challenge, a unique concept introduced in the World 10K Bangalore, will make a comeback after a gap of two years, featuring the country's leading male and female track and field and long distance runners, representing state athletic associations affiliated to the Athletic Federation of India and Sports Control Boards recognized by the Athletic Federation of India.
Each athletic association/sports control board can field only one team, comprising three of its best athletes - two men and one woman. The team with the fastest aggregate finish time will be declared as the winning Nation's Challenge team and will stand to gain prize money of Rs 4.5 lakh. The second-placed team will win Rs 3.25 lakh, followed by Rs 2.15 lakh for the third teams and Rs 1.10 lakh for the fourth.
Individual winners of the separate prize fund for Indians will also be eligible for the prize money in the Nation's Challenge if they are part of the winning teams, thus increasing the quantum of their potential winnings.
Get Active Expo dates shifted: Taking a leaf from some of the major distance running events around the world, and aimed at easing the pressures on the amateur runners coming in to collect their running numbers, it has been decided this year to hold the Event Expo one week earlier, from May 18 to 20, 2012, and the venue for the same will be Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium.
The Get Active Expo at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium will be inaugurated at 3 p.m. on May 18 by the star cast and crew of the upcoming Kannada movie Ondu Rupayalli Eradu Preethi (OREP). The stars are Vijay Raghavendra, Sandeep and Ramya Barna. The director of the movie, Dayal and the composer Rickey Kej too will be present for the inauguration.
The Expo will be on between 11.00 am to 7.00 pm on all the three days and will also be the venue for all confirmed participants from Bengaluru and its suburbs to come and collect their running numbers along with the goodie bags. Outstation runners can collect their running numbers and goodie bags on May 26 between 11.00 am and 7.00 pm at the same venue.
While the new dates constitute an entire weekend, giving participants the whole of Friday, Saturday and Sunday to come and collect their running numbers, the period of a week before Race Day also gives them ample time to study in detail the race day instructions, familiarize themselves with the security arrangements, the traffic restrictions, the road closures and other arrangements that will come into force for Race Day.
