Runner's story

Akshay Mohan - A Runners Tale – Awesome Footprints(Impressions)
I have been a participant in the TCS 10K run since the year of its inception and under its former banner too. Each year has been a memorable experience and I got to realize, the race is not just about winning it, it is a lot more. It is about the people involved in organizing it, your family and friends supporting you, the other participants running with you and one of the most important things, the supporters all along the way.

This in one of the events I look forward to eagerly each year, simply for the joy I get from being part of it. Personally I have not looked at my event – the open 10K as a competition but more a place to make friends and enjoy the run above anything else. It is also about being a participant and encouraging others who are running and being an inspiration to those not fortunate enough to participate that year.

Last year, I could not practice the amount I wanted, so towards the 7km mark, I started getting tired, the people around, the runners and spectator’s encouragement was what pushed me to the finish, and I did complete it in a time much better than I thought I could. I was amazed at the wonders people around giving encouragement can do! The finishing of a run is always remembered and with huge crowds at the finish line cheering you on, it feels like you have their legs, along with yours to have an excellent sprint to the finish line instead of a jog, which makes you feel much better about the performance.

Another encouraging factor are the other runners. The encouragement given by most of us, when another athlete is in trouble is heart rendering. It is something a sportsperson appreciates and remembers for the rest of their life. Be it just giving water or picking up a fallen runner, it all happens during the event and the people do help.

A run is not just a run, it’s a lot more. It is what YOU make of it! It can many at times be a life changer, getting all that encouragement and appreciation for the physical effort it takes to go through the run and all the people involved in making it an ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE rather than just another run, like any other day.

The attitude of the co-runners, spectators and the support staff for the event made it an excellent event last year. At the end of the race, with the people distributing the medals, giving an encouraging smile and congratulating you for a race completed made the event all the more special.

Kudos to the TCS team for making it an event I shall forever cherish and remember fondly, even after many man y years.

Vaishnavi Tekumalla - Here’s to New Beginnings!
This year, I discovered two incredible ways to channel my energy. First, I started running. A little history – I’ve never had an inclination for physical activity. At every mandatory running race in school, I was the chubby one who casually walked to the finish (secretly fearing the sports teacher’s scolding but risking it anyway; such was my lack of interest). Inspired by my husband, who loves all sport, and my desire to constantly try something new, I decided I would give running a shot (maybe it will help in the long run?)

I started slowly and increased my distances gradually. I promised myself I would be regular and went to bed early. In just a few weeks, I was addicted… To a world of resplendent early mornings, in lush green parks where the sun rises in the lakes under lotuses and birds make pretty patterns in the sky – a gentle world I had been missing out on. I’ve shed some pounds and feel fitter than I ever have. I sleep better, eat smarter and feel healthier – a significant change from my sedentary routine. Best of all, after an hour of finding solitude for my thoughts while I jog past gardens of roses and magnolias, I’m bursting with positive energy.

Second, I started volunteering at Rang De. When I first heard of the concept of microfinance, it completely blew me away. To be able to help people who are miles away in Rural India, in a way that empowers them to be productive, become self-reliant and develop self-esteem, and all this, from the comfort of my home! What a remarkable solution to the harsh problem of poverty that weighs our nation down! A solution made possible, simply by loaning a small sum to someone who needs a chance to make life better and make it better for their children. Loaning, not donating. I have great respect for the dedicated entrepreneurs who work hard to repay their loans – there is such dignity in that, it is humbling. And the magical part – once repaid, I can loan the same amount to help someone else!

I heard about Rang De from a friend and found it to be an excellent platform to make an impact through social investments. The transparency with which they operate was evident and I was happy to be a part of their fight against poverty. Looking for a way to contribute even further to the cause, I recently joined Rang De as a volunteer. The journey has been exciting and fulfilling. I am working on some interesting initiatives and I am constantly inspired by the energy and resolve of the Rang De Team and the enthusiasm of the volunteers and Chapter members.

When I heard that Rang De team members had Run for Rang De before, I was immediately excited. What a wonderful opportunity to combine two beautiful worlds – working for a good cause and getting healthier in the process (ok, that makes it two good causes)! And that’s how I decided to run in the TCS World 10K Run. I am running for Rang De and you can support my run by contributing towards my pledge.

And when I finally do cross that finish line I hope to do so with the satisfaction that I’ve made a positive difference in someone’s life… and mine too!
